What is the difference between a shared certificate and a domain-specific certificate?

Problem:

What is the difference between a shared certificate and a domain-specific certificate?

Solution:

A shared certificate is purchased for a server or VPS in the server name (server.server.com) and installed at the server level. Any domain hosted on that server can call a page securely by accessing the certificate from the server level. When this is done, the browser address bar will show the server name in the URL, like: https://server.server.com/domain.com/page.html.

All of our shared hosting servers have secure certificates installed at the server level. Any shared hosting accounts can access this certificate and call pages securely free of charge. However, if you do not wish to show the server name in the browser line to visitors, then you will need to purchase a certificate for your specific domain name (domain.com). When secure pages are called they will show in the address bar as https://domain.com/page.html.

Dedicated server customers can purchase a certificate for their server and also domain-specific certificates for their clients if they wish.
